Rooted In History

THE BLIND HORSE

In September of 1862, Anton Dreps and his wife Josephine purchased the 80-acre farm that now houses The Blind Horse. The property included a small log cabin, which Anton later incorporated into a brick farmhouse in 1881, laying the foundation for a place that has continued to evolve for generations.

For more than a century, the Dreps family farmed this land. By 1891, the property had expanded to include what is now the Pine Hills Country Club and Golf Course. In 1984, “Dreps Acres” was designated a Sheboygan County Landmark and still retains its original Kohler address today.

ONE HORSE, ONE LEGACY

Like many farms of the time, the Dreps family relied on teams of horses to cultivate the land. One horse, however, stood apart. A blind Percheron draft horse named Birdy.

When this story was uncovered in the Sheboygan County Historical archives by our owners, it became the inspiration behind The Blind Horse name, a tribute to resilience, character, and the quiet strength that helped shape this land.

In 2018, Birdy's story was brought to life in a new way. A striking, life-sized sculpture now stands at the front of the property, crafted from reclaimed fuel oil tanks by artist Carl Vanderheyden. Standing seven feet tall and ten feet long, Birdy welcomes guests day and night and serves as a lasting symbol of the property's history and spirit.

A NEW BEGINNING

In 2011, Bob and Connie, along with Matt and Heidi Moeller, purchased the property and began a new chapter. The restaurant opened in June of 2012, followed by the winery and patio in April of 2014, bringing together food, wine, and hospitality in a place shaped by history and built for gathering.

In September of 2018, renovations to The Granary were completed, and the space was opened to the public, adding another setting for guests to come together and enjoy the experience.

As The Blind Horse continued to grow, new spaces were created to welcome guests in new ways. In 2025, the Cedarburg Cellar opened in the heart of Cedarburg, offering a relaxed setting for wine, small plates, and easy conversation. In 2026, The Terrace will open in Kohler, introducing an open-air experience designed for lingering moments and time well spent on the grounds.

Together, these spaces reflect an ongoing commitment to creating places where people can explore, gather, and return again and again.
